The YouTube SEO checklist for 2026
Titles, descriptions, tags, chapters, captions and publish time. What each field does, and what actually moves the needle.

YouTube's search and recommendation systems try to match each video with viewers who will watch it and be satisfied. Metadata helps YouTube understand what your video is about; viewer behavior decides who sees it. Here is what to get right on every upload.
Title (max 100 characters)
- Put the main keyword near the start.
- Make a clear promise or create curiosity, but never mislead: misleading titles hurt satisfaction signals and can break spam policies.
- Keep the important part in the first ~50 characters; longer titles are cut off on mobile.
Thumbnail
- One focal subject, high contrast, readable at phone size.
- Three words or fewer of text, and don't repeat the title.
- A custom thumbnail requires a verified channel (phone verification).
Description (max 5,000 characters)
- The first 1 to 2 lines appear in search and above the "more" fold, so lead with the value of the video and the main keyword.
- Add a short summary with related terms, then links and a call to action.
- Add up to three hashtags. The first three can appear above the title.
Chapters
For long videos, list timestamps in the description starting at 0:00, with at least three chapters of 10 seconds or more. Chapters help viewers navigate and can show up in Google search results.
Tags (max 500 characters total)
Tags matter less than titles and descriptions. They mostly help with common misspellings. Use a handful of specific ones.
Captions
Upload an accurate captions file. It makes the video accessible, helps viewers who watch without sound, and gives YouTube a full transcript.
Category, language and audience
- Choose the right category and set the video and audio language.
- You must declare whether the video is made for kids. This is a legal requirement (COPPA) and changes which features are available.
Altered or synthetic content
If a video shows realistic altered or AI-generated content that viewers could mistake for real, YouTube requires you to disclose it. ViralForge sets the flag automatically.
Publish time
Publish when your audience is online. YouTube Analytics shows when your viewers are on YouTube; ViralForge reads it and suggests a time slot.
After publishing
- Pin a comment that asks a question to start a conversation.
- Add the video to a relevant playlist to increase session watch time.
- Watch average view duration and click-through rate, then adjust hooks and thumbnails on future videos.
ViralForge fills in every one of these fields for each video, and you can edit any of them before publishing.
