On Shorts, the decision to keep watching happens almost instantly. A Short's performance depends heavily on how many people choose to view it rather than swipe away, and on how much of it they watch. So your first line matters more than anything else in the video.
These are the hook structures ViralForge's script agent uses most, and why they work.
1. The impossible claim
"This fish can walk on land for up to a week."
State something that sounds false but is true. Curiosity does the rest. Keep the payoff for the end.
2. The countdown with a twist
"3 things in your kitchen that are older than the pyramids. Number 1 is still edible."
Lists give viewers a map of the video, and teasing the last item gives them a reason to stay.
3. Direct address
"If you drink coffee every morning, you need to hear this."
Name the viewer. People stop for content that is clearly about them.
4. The visual interrupt
Open on the most striking image in the video, with no intro. Motion and contrast in the first frame catch the eye before a word is spoken.
5. The mistake
"You've been charging your phone wrong."
Loss aversion is stronger than curiosity. Only use it when you actually have a correction to offer.
6. The open loop
"Scientists tried to recreate this sound for 40 years. Listen to what they finally got."
Promise a payoff that only arrives at the end.
7. The comparison
"$1 steak vs $100 steak."
Two things side by side make an instant question: which one wins?
8. The story drop-in
"At 3am, the lighthouse keeper saw the light turn on by itself."
Start in the middle of the action. Skip the background.
9. The bold number
"97% of people fail this memory test."
Specific numbers feel credible and invite viewers to test themselves.
Hook checklist
- The first words appear on screen as captions, since many people watch muted
- No logo intro, greeting or "in this video"
- The visual in the first frame matches the hook
- The payoff arrives before the end, then loops back smoothly to the start
ViralForge scores each hook before you publish and suggests a stronger version if needed.
